This is a Map of North America from James Bay in the north to the northern part of South America in the south. These are the maps from pages 40-43 from the Euler-Atlas. Put together they form a complete map of North America. The top left Island map contains a smaller map of the outskirts of Hudson Bay. The top right edge has a large title cartouche with title and publisher. On the bottom left is a comparative mileage scale. Top left and bottom right contain smaller cartouches that indicate what part of the greater map they form. The map was published in 1760 in an issue of a school atlas by the great mathematician Leonhard Euler (1707-1783) in "Geographical Atlas" which consists of 44 land- maps in which all parts of the earth were presented. The map was very accurate for its time and uses all known information. It is clear that in most of North America; only the coast lines are known. Of the major lakes only three are highlighted. Leonhard Euler (1707-1783) was a Swiss mathematician who was known to have completed around 900 publications. In 1727 he became professor of physics and mathematics at the University of St. Petersburg. In 1740 he became blind on one side and in 1741 was requested by King Frederick II to work at the Berlin Academy of Sciences. In the same year the Academy was combined with the new academy called the Royal Academy of Science. There he remained until 1766 when he then went back to St. Petersburg and was highly productive until his death. Besides the publication of the atlas, he is famous for his mathematical and physical accomplishments. |
