La Secunde Table Generale Selon Ptol.
Sebastian Münster
The magnificent world map is taken from Sebastian Münster’s great compendium of Renaissance knowledge ‘Cosmographia’.
The rediscovery of the "Geography Hyphegesis" by the ancient author Claudius Ptolemy is certainly one of the most important literary discoveries for the geography of modern times. It marks the beginning of a new age of worldview. Ptolemy's writings on astronomy, mathematics and music are already known. But his cartographic work remained hidden for centuries. It survives in a Byzantine manuscript, which only finds its way to Florence as a translation at the end of the 14th century and is recognized in its importance in this early center of the European Renaissance. However, this is not a collection of maps, but rather texts in the form of tables and written instructions which required their cartographic implementation.
Münster’s wood-engraved double-page map of the Ptolemaic Old World features the continents of Africa, Europe and Asia. America is not shown. In the south, a "terra incognita" unites the African continent with the Asian continent, turning the Indian Ocean into an inland sea. The ornate border depicts the winds as puffing putti.
